White-throated Sparrow (Zonotrichia albicollis)
Now briefly appearing in local woodland margins and gardens as it returns north for breeding in the summer. A moderate sized sparrow with a distinctive white and black striped head and a spotted breast. The yellow patch behind the beak and above the eye is a good way to distinguish them at a quick glance from the superficially similar White-crowned Sparrow.
You will know this bird is around when you hear its call, usually rendered mnemonically as “Oh sweet Canada Canada Canada”
